Each spring the CCM graduating musical theatre class writes, choreographs, stages and performs its own show in New York in front of Broadway agents and casting directors. In April, the Friends of CCM and over 325 guests were treated to a special Cincinnati performance of the Musical Theatre Not Famous Yet Showcase.

Nearly 500 people attended the 2010 SPCA Fur Ball last month at the Duke Energy Center. Proceeds from the event benefited SPCA Cincinnati. The evening included live and silent auctions, entertainment, an awards presentation, dinner and dancing. The Animal Hero Award was presented to Officer Bear, who was adopted from SPCA Cincinnati. Officer Bear, an Eastern Sheherd Labrador mix, has been a member of the Cleves Canine Unit since May 2008. He’s used his drug-sniffing skills to help make more than 70 arrests. His partner and handler is Narcotics Unit Supervisor Sgt. Cliff Wright. Lori Fenner and Dr. Dave Bauman, DVM, were the recipients of the P.B. Johnston Humane Care Award.

Kindervelt’s Flower Power: Tie-dye as far as the eye can see! Kindervelt drew upon its “Flower Power” to attract 185 tie-dyed, groovy guests to a party under the big top at the Cincinnati Flower Show. In its inaugural tie-in with the Flower Show, the Kindervelt event included dinner-by-the-bite, entertainment, dancing, raffles, auctions, and the chance to mingle with Bootsy and Patti Collins. Flower Power co-chairs were Susan Guckert and Sheila Maxwell. Proceeds benefit Kindervelt’s four-year commitment to the Division of Asthma Research at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Donna Speigel, owner of The Snooty Fox, and her dance pro Doug Reynolds, were ready to rumba at the Music Hall Ballroom, taking first place in the Cincinnati Arts Association’s fourth-annual Dancing for the Stars. A record audience of 500 helped the event raised more than $40,000 to benefit CAA’s Overture Awards and Academy – the nation’s largest locally run high school arts scholarship competition. Marvin Smith, owner of Ollie’s Trolley, and his dance partner, Doreen Beatrice, took second place; Cathy Crain, president of Cincinnati Opera, and her dance partner, Barry Bernard, placed third. Inspired by the hit ABC-TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” the competition featured eight Cincinnati celebrities dancing to woo the crowd and the judges.

The 10-day extravaganza that is the Cincinnati Flower Show opened with a gala on the show grounds at Symmes Township Park. The flower show, which opened to the public the next day, featured exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, competitions, teas, a Kindervelt gala and a party for young professionals. Photos: Paula Norton

Food, fashion and fine music came together at Kenwood Country Club in a fundraiser for the Cincinnati Symphony Club. The club's annual April Affair fashion show focused on "Designer Fashions on a Dime" and featured Donna Speigel with fashions available at her Snooty Fox boutiques. The event celebrated longtime club member and professional model Charlotte Deupree, who has volunteered each year for the April Affair. The day included a social hour, lunch, fashion show, boutique shopping and arts and crafts. Proceeds benefit the Cincinnati Symphony Club, which was established 87 years ago to support Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra programs.

Keith Lockhart was presented with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra’s Pinnacle Award during a dinner at the Netherland Hilton Hall of Mirrors. A wind quintet performed during the cocktail hour, then guests feasted while being entertained by welcoming remarks from emcee Steve Monder. A string quartet accompanied dinner, followed by a performance by pianist Michael Chertock and a video tribute to Lockhart, whose return to Cincinnati came just days after the the birth of his son.
