Adventurous art lovers packed the Mercantile Center for Secret ArtWorks, picking their favorites from the hundreds of works created for the annual fundraiser for ArtWorks. It was only after they’d made their choice of the 5x7-inch mini-masterpieces that purchasers learned who had created the art.

Nearly 250 guests enjoyed dinner, music and dancing as they gathered for the fourth annual Evening of Hope…A Celebration of Life. The event at the Great American Tower at Queen City Square was a fundraiser for the Cancer Support Community (formerly The Wellness Community). It was organized by co-chairs Bill Krul and Aaron Bley, with assistance from Chris and Marilyn Dolle, Linda Green, Mischele Hagood and Lucy Ward. The evening honored Fran and Wayne Carlisle for their pivotal role in supporting the organization from its very beginning. The Carlisles have remained supporters for over 20 years.The gala also provided a glamorous setting for the official unveiling of the organization’s new name. After 20 years in the Tri-state as The Wellness Community, the new name follows the merger in 2009 of The Wellness Community-National and Gilda’s Clubs Worldwide. Photos by Frimbot.photag

Books by the Banks – it’s a successful tale, no matter how you look at it. More than 100 authors and countless volunteers took part in the annual event celebrating the joy of books and reading, and attendance jumped 16 percent this year. Teaming up to bring Books by the Banks to the Duke Energy Convention Center were Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Mercantile Library, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, University of Cincinnati Libraries, Northern Kentucky University Steely Library, Clermont County Public Library, and Middletown Public Library.

More than 100 friends and supporters of Cancer Support Community (formerly The Wellness Community) attended a preview party at Saks Fifth Avenue for the 13th annual Key to the Cure. Italian jewelry designer Marco Bicego made his second Key to the Cure appearance, greeting guests and discussing his designs. Two percent of local sales from Oct. 19-23 were directed to the group’s free programs of support, education and hope for people with cancer and their loved ones.

More than 700 turned out for a patriotic tribute to America’s wounded warriors, the military men and women injured in service to our country. The event at the Duke Energy Center, USO Tribute Cincinnati, raised $500,000 for USO support programs at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Anne Kereiakes and Karen Cassidy chaired the tribute, with Katie Cassidy and Tracey Conrad chairing a Support Your Troops after-party, a new addition this year. Patriotic entertainment was provided by Teresa Scanlan, Miss America 2011; the Victory Belles, a World War II-era vocal trio; and 4Troops, four former soldiers who have joined forces to honor American veterans through song. The after-party, which immediately followed the USO Tribute, featured the Liberty Belles, music by DJ ETrayn, a midnight snack and dessert buffet and cash bar.

It was a star-studded evening as 700 supporters of St. Aloysius celebrated the start of the orphanage’s 175th year. The evening paid tribute to St. Al’s “Stars of Excellence” – Catholic Health Partners, psychiatrist Dr. Elliott Freideman and foster parents Shirley Walker and Tyrone Davis. Nick Clooney hosted the evening, with Whoopi Goldberg as celebrity guest. As a surprise to her, Chris Darley, former producer of her popular television show, “Hollywood Squares,” attended. WCPO anchor Carol Williams served as emcee. Proceeds from the silent and live auctions will support children’s programming.
